As November arrives, we are taking a moment to reflect on something that sits at the heart of systems thinking: connections.
We often talk about the importance of seeing the bigger picture, recognizing patterns, understanding different perspectives, and identifying opportunities for meaningful change. But behind every system are people. People who ask questions, challenge assumptions, build relationships, take risks, and work together to make things better.
At Cairn Guidance, we are especially grateful for those people.
This year, we have had the privilege of connecting with educators, organizational leaders, facilitators, community advocates, and change makers who are using systems thinking and simulation-based learning to tackle complex challenges.
And as we reflect on these experiences, we recognize that the most meaningful part of our work is not just the simulations themselves. It is what people do with the learning long after the game ends.
What We’re Grateful For: Reflections From Our Team
We asked members of the Cairn Guidance team to reflect on a simple question:
What are you especially grateful for this year as you think about our Systems Simulations community?
These reflections remind us that the relationships we build, the perspectives we encounter, and the lessons we learn from one another are just as important as the tools we use.

While each of our reflections is unique, there is a common thread: meaningful change starts with people. Whether it is a conversation that sparks a lifelong friendship, a partnership that opens new doors, or a team working behind the scenes, we are reminded that relationships are at the heart of what we do. And for that, we are grateful!
Celebrating the Organizations Making Change Happen
We are also grateful for the organizations that have welcomed Systems Simulations into their classrooms, workplaces, conferences, and communities. From preparing future educators to navigate organizational change, to helping experienced professionals rethink their approaches to complex challenges, these partnerships demonstrate the power of experiential learning.
We are especially grateful for Chicago Public Schools, where Cairn Guidance facilitated a simulation with health educators in one of the largest school districts in the United States. The focus was around implementation of a new substance use prevention curriculum that Cairn Guidance had created for the district. During the experience, one participant shifted from believing that blame could drive change to recognizing the importance of collective action, shared decision-making, and reflection. It is a powerful reminder that meaningful change is not about pointing fingers. It is about understanding our roles within a system, sharing decisions, sharing errors, and working together to move change forward.
We are also grateful for Berea College, where Dr. Michelle Thornton uses Systems Thinking, Systems Changing™ with teacher education students to help them experience the dynamics they may encounter in future district and department meetings. The simulation gives students an opportunity to see how others think and operate, and practice navigating those dynamics before encountering them professionally. As Dr. Thornton shared, “The simulation sparks great topics of conversation for my introductory class.”
To the organizations willing to try something new, the educators bringing systems thinking into their classrooms, and the leaders creating space for meaningful conversations: thank you. Your creativity, curiosity, and commitment inspire us!
Gratitude Is Something We Can Put Into Practice
One of the things we appreciate about systems thinking is that it encourages us to recognize relationships and connections that might otherwise go unnoticed.
- Who has helped you see a challenge from a different perspective?
- Who has asked a question that changed your thinking?
- Who has supported you in creating change, even when the path forward wasn’t clear?
This season, we encourage you to take a moment to recognize those people.
A small expression of gratitude can strengthen a relationship, spark a conversation, or remind someone that their contributions matter. And sometimes, those small actions have effects that extend far beyond what we can see.
We’d Love to Hear Your Story!
As we celebrate the people who make this work meaningful, we want to hear from you, too.
- How have you used systems thinking or a Systems Simulation in your work?
- What’s an “aha!” moment that has stayed with you?
- Is there someone whose approach to change you’re especially grateful for?
Whether you have a story, a photo, a reflection, or a creative idea, we would love for you to share it. And as a small expression of our gratitude, everyone who contributes can choose a thank-you gift from Cairn Guidance.
Thank You for Being Part of the Bigger Picture
Systems change does not happen in isolation. It happens through people, relationships, shared learning, and collective action. We’re grateful to be connected to a community of people who care deeply about creating meaningful change.
Thank you for the questions you ask, the perspectives you bring, the conversations you facilitate, and the difference you make.
We are excited to continue learning and growing alongside you in 2027 and beyond.
With gratitude,
The Cairn Guidance Team
