As states patiently (or impatiently!) wait for CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health funding opportunities, they are setting meeting times to write their proposals, strategically plan, build partnerships and leverage other funding opportunities. I know through many discussions with various states that people are frustrated the funding for school health is supposed to go to Public Health Departments as the lead agency rather than Departments of Education as it has in the past. Health Matters!!
The all-encompassing contract with the Clinton Foundation Health Matters conference has come to an end. It was a huge success- with many viewers online all day at msnbc.com. We were trending at #2 nationally on Twitter most of the day. Last week was one of the most exhilarating weeks of my career. Being the content lead for the conference, I worked with the speakers over the past couple of months guiding and supporting them for framing speeches, moderating roles and panel presentations. The conference is next Tuesday, January 15 in Palm Springs CA. On a roll…!
After Italy, it has been a whirlwind. We signed a few contracts and we are quite busy. Work has taken us to Palm Springs and La Quinta, CA for a week and now I am in Ohio for CDC facilitating a School Health Guidelines training. In CA, we are working on the Clinton Foundation’s Health Matters Initiative as the content lead for their anchor event, the Health Matters Conference in La Quinta CA, January 15. Many of you know Ginny Ehrlich who is the CEO of the new initiative and rocking it! Here is Read ▸ about On a roll…!
I’m back!
Just completed a fabulous trip in Italy. I hiked for seven days from Tuscan town to Tuscan town. A company transported my luggage each day (dreamy) and I carried a daypack. The company gave me the hiking directions and a cell phone (in case of emergency). I went unguided (paper guide only) and alone and it was an amazing, empowering experience!Upon my return, this week has really picked up for Cairn! We've signed three contracts this week already. I'm looking forward to working on a Training of Read ▸ about I’m back!
Post-Time Off
So, as I begin consulting again, after taking about 6 months MOSTLY off (ok, one contract that was part time developing a national school health initiative), I've been considering how Cairn is different from Bogli Consulting. I launched Bogli Consulting in 2006, briefly after leaving the Oregon Department of Education. Now, six years later, we have some different goals. We hope to spend more time with youth. That may include Positive Youth Development work, or facilitating youth through advocacy Read ▸ about Post-Time Off
Don’t Feed the Animals
I visited the San Antonio Zoo in the middle of my 8 mile run at ASHA two weeks ago. I was there for about 2 hours walking around and noticed signs posted all over the place warning humans not to feed the animals. The signs explained that the animals were on a special diet that keeps them healthy. Our human food is not included in that special diet.As I meandered through the Zoo, I noticed something. Maybe humorous? Maybe just sad. The only food options for humans are incredibly non- nutrient Read ▸ about Don’t Feed the Animals
Remember the Alamo! Remember ASHA!
As I head back to Oregon, on a plane after a layover in Salt Lake City, I reflect on my week in San Antonio. I'm exhausted, overwhelmed, invigorated and feel a little postpartum like I usually do after seeing so many colleagues, meeting new people and having an opportunity to connect with people I consider close friends. I think of the highlights, buzz words and new information that I collected. I think about how I can be a better school health consultant to share my knowledge, spread Read ▸ about Remember the Alamo!
