Foundations of Health Education
I knew I was working with a great group of teachers when they were asked by their District Coordinator, Tempe Beall, to introduce themselves and share which National Health Education Standard they enjoyed teaching the most. I loved hearing things like, "I have my students role plays to practice interpersonal communication and self-management." "I love teaching students accessing information; accessing valid and reliable sources to promote health." “I really enjoyed your Read ▸ about Foundations of Health Education
“Smoking is Killing Kentucky, Literally and Fiscally.”
I moved to Kentucky over a year ago from Portland, Oregon. Regularly, people ask me what I notice are the biggest differences. I have observed two major things... how overweight people are and how many people smoke. I have been exposed to more secondhand smoke than I have in my life. When I lived in Louisville this past year (I now reside in Morehead, KY), I used to run downtown 2-3 times a week to the waterfront. I was exposed to the smoke from people walking Read ▸ about “Smoking is Killing Kentucky, Literally and Fiscally.”
Stay-cation; Holiday 2015
The past two years, I have served as the content lead for the Clinton Health Matters Conference, a conference attached to the Humana Challenge in Palm Springs CA. This experience was incomparable to other contracts I've had. Working with organizations, business and individuals making huge investments in the health and wellbeing of Americans was inspiring, exhilarating and incredibly powerful. It’s a New Year!
2014 was a unique year for Cairn Guidance. It was the first complete year of work after the Director's bicycle trip across the United States the summer of 2013. Jess came back rejuvenated and ready to continue building a business she launched in 2006. After taking 6 months off and minimally sustaining the work, she dove back into it in 2014 and Cairn Guidance had a great year! Read ▸ about It’s a New Year!
Employee Mental Wellness
I'm a school health consulting biz... so why am I working with a large Senior Living Business called Gulf Coast Health Care (GCHC)? Well, some of my work is outside of school health. For example, I'm working with Alta Planning in Grand Rapids MI, funded by Department of Transportation on helping create a more bicycle and pedestrian friendly community. I've developed programs for the Peace Corps and worked in Homer, Alaska to facilitate a public health plan for their community. My work Read ▸ about Employee Mental Wellness
Kentucky Association for Health, PE Recreation and Dance (KAHPERD)
For years, I've attended the Oregon chapter of this same organization. It's the professional organization for educators and faculty in school health education, physical education, recreation and dance. It was my first year attending the KAHPERD conference and I was impressed. Sunday kicked off with a free pre-training (about 60 in attendance!) on the Presidential Youth Fitness Program. It is a free program developed to ensure what happens before, during and after the fitness Read ▸ about Kentucky Association for Health, PE Recreation and Dance (KAHPERD)
