Yesterday was Kentucky's first ever Let's Move Active Schools (LMAS) Physical Activity Leader (PAL) Training. Jamie Sparks, Coordinated School Health Director at the Kentucky Department of Education and I were the trainers. We had 57 PE teachers (K-12 represented) from all over the region excited to join in on the skill-building workshop, and, of course the fun! Welcoming the participants for the day. Yesterday, LMAS held it's first-ever LMAS PAL training at a national conference. “It’s Just One Cupcake… What’s the Big Deal?”
Surprisingly, the most difficult, heated, complicated, divisive discussions in school health right now do not have to do with sex education, but celebrations and competitive foods (vending/fundraisers). I recently saw a friend post on Facebook that she brought cupcakes to her son's pre-school birthday party. I texted her that she was killing me! Her response? It's the last year he gets them. Well, I didn't respond, but I don't think she got it. I'm not against cupcakes or sugar. But, here's the Read ▸ about “It’s Just One Cupcake… What’s the Big Deal?”
Standardized Testing- to What Extent?
Yesterday I came across this article posted by the Huffington Post by Lisa T. McElroy for Slate called, What Happened When I Opted My Kids Out Of Standardized Tests. It is a sad, but true story of two highly educated parents making an informed decision for their daughters and how the education leadership pushes back. The pushing back is a result of higher up pressure on the importance of taking a test. “The principal then said that the test would show us how our Read ▸ about Standardized Testing- to What Extent?

Resources to Support K-12 School Health Education
I have had a folder on my computer for over ten years now that is called "Much-Used Documents." I'm not sure that is an accurate way to use the English language, however, the folder name has stuck. In it, I have my go-to favorite resources, tools, documents, materials. It's a quick way to access what I need when I need it. Today, I'll list the tools that I refer to often for Health Education. Tomorrow, I'll list those tools I use for broader school health work. My hope is that you, the reader Read ▸ about Resources to Support K-12 School Health Education
Franklin County Public Schools
A good friend and colleague of mine, Audra, is a middle school health and PE teacher in Frankfort, Kentucky. Recently, Audra was visiting me in Louisville for a late Sunday lunch and we got on the topic of health education and lack of professional development (PD) opportunities for her district. It's not that her administration doesn't support health and PE. It's that there aren't dollars to provide strong PD in both areas. And, with more PD days cut over the years, not much time. And, when that Read ▸ about Franklin County Public Schools
