$2.5 billion. That’s the current value of the African American hair industry, and it’s projected to hit $4.5 billion by 2034. Why?
One reason is that Black women spend 9 times more on ethnic hair products than non-Black consumers. Guilty! My bathroom closet? Basically a mini beauty supply store with shampoos, hair steamers, hair dryers, moisturizing products, protective styling essentials—you name it, I’ve got it. On top of that I take immense pride in changing my hairstyles because it is a way I express my personality and versatility.

Lately I’ve been embracing my natural hair and texture and minimizing superfluous spending on hair care products. It is an intentional choice and honestly, it feels so liberating.
That said, not all Black folks feel confident rocking how their/our hair naturally grows. Is it “too ethnic”? Will I be seen as “professional”? And even for me, my hair confidence depends on the space I’m in. (Shoutout to the Crown Act for protecting our right to show up as we are!)
That’s why representation and support matter. Confidence in our natural hair isn’t just personal—it’s cultural, social, and deeply tied to self-esteem.
I am a self-esteem cadre member writing on behalf of the Dove Self- Esteem project + Cairn Guidance . As an educator, and mental health advocate, my mission is to help students thrive not just in college, but in life. Good grades are great but self- confidence is even better!
If you’re an educator looking for ways to help your students embrace hair with coils, curls, waves and protective hairstyles, check out the Dove Self-Esteem Project’s My Hair My Crown curriculum.

Each educator who completes this form will be entered to attend ASCA 2026 or Shape 2026.
I love this program because it empowers young people, particularly girls, to develop a positive body image and strong self-confidence.
