Have you ever had a professional encounter that completely changed your trajectory? For me, that moment came in 2019 as a college junior at the NYS AHPERD Conference. I wandered by The Dove Self-Esteem Project (DSEP) booth, curious about an activity that focused on appreciating things we love about ourselves beyond physical appearance – I cherished my Dominican culture – and just like that I received a tote bag and a bookmark that gave me access to all the DESP programs.
Fast forward to my student teaching experience – I taught a DSEP lesson, and the positive response from both my students and host teacher solidified my belief in its impact.
During my second year of teaching, an email from DSEP requesting new Cadre Trainers arrived in my inbox. Thrilled, I applied, especially knowing about their new Celebrándome (Celebrating Me) curriculum, specifically designed for Spanish-speaking students. Becoming a Cadre Trainer felt like coming full circle – my initial DSEP experience acknowledging my culture led me to promote a program that did the same for countless students.
Being a DSEP Cadre Trainer has pushed me professionally. I’ve met incredible change-makers in health and physical education through presentations, state conferences, and national conventions. However, the most rewarding moments are the ones where teachers and counselors approach the DSEP booth, just like I did years ago, and express their love for the program’s impact on their students. That’s what fuels my passion for sharing the Dove Self-Esteem Project with the world.
