This past school year, I met with my girl’s group in South Carolina and we began the curriculum for Erika’s Lighthouse on Mental Health. I met with 20 6th-grade girls to discuss the topic of Mental health and depression. We began by bringing in the school’s Mental Health Counselor to discuss her role here at the school and the services she provides to the students. We then began with Level 1 of the Erika’s Lighthouse curriculum- We All Have Mental Health.
The girls were very attentive to the video about Sasha and Andre and their Mental Health Issues. They were able to discuss the difference between the two and how they coped. This opened up discussions among the girls about their own feelings and thoughts about mental health. Together we completed the Notice and Wonder Chart and ended the session with the exit ticket cards about their current feelings.
I enjoyed opening up this topic of discussion with the young ladies. We will continue to meet every two weeks as a group and continue our monthly empowerment sessions as well!
