During the winter and spring of 2022, the Cairn Guidance team reviewed multiple textbooks, curricula, and resources for the Bend-La Pine School District in Deschutes County Oregon.
In June, 2022, our team facilitated an in-person, two-day Skills-Based Health Education Standards and Assessment training with health educators in the district, followed by a third day creating a K-12 health education scope and sequence (based on CDCs HECAT), followed by a fourth day of reviewing curricula programs and resources to determine what supporting materials be the best fit to align to their scope and sequence.
During the fourth day review, curricula publishers and organizations either gave us access to their programs (remotely and/or shipped materials) and the curricula lists we compiled helped the educators make informed decisions based on foundational/logistical information about the programs.
These curricula reviews were not intended to be a thorough “HECAT” review, but rather gave the educators some pre-information as they reviewed over 50 programs and resources.
There were some textbooks and resources that were not included on the final lists for specific reasons- lack of skills-based progression within lessons/units, harmful practices, non-inclusive content, and/or had inaccurate information.
We do acknowledge that there are many programs out there that we might not know about or might be new and could be added to this list. We were also only funded to review certain content areas. This is a start and possibly in the future we would be happy to update/revise the lists to be more comprehensive (inclusive of injury prevention, nutrition, etc.).
Feel free to download (and use!) the four documents here. They are:
- A review of Comprehensive K-12 Programs
- A review of Mental, Emotional and Social Health Programs and Resources
- A review of Sexual Health Programs and Resources
- A review of Substance Use Prevention Programs and Resources
