One of the foremost reasons we live in the Midwest is to experience the beauty of the four seasons. Each one brings with it a change in scenery, a change in temperature, and a change in adventure. Additionally, as many Midwest educators may observe, each season often brings a change in body confidence for some of our students. The Dove Self-Esteem Project focuses on building body confidence and self-esteem, helping students navigate through their adolescent season.
Beginning with the four seasons of each year, summer represents a time of more freedom for many students, freedom from school and from being indoors. For some, it’s freedom from being around many classmates in the school setting. Instead, students tend to enjoy associating with those with whom they feel accepted.
In our estimation, fall can be exciting for some students, as they return to school. The beginning of school makes it easier for some to see friends and form new relationships. Students socialize and interact with their classmates by participating in various opportunities in the classroom.
We believe winter can be tough for some students, due to bitterly cold days and lots of snow. They spend days in school and nights hunkered down at home.
Spring brings the sun, flowering buds, and slightly warmer temperatures. Students begin to shed their winter layers, and some look forward to spring break, allowing them to visit warmer areas.
While these seasons address temperatures and weather, seasons may also address a student’s emotional state regarding their body confidence. Unfortunately, seasons such as fall and winter, may metaphorically allow a student to hide physically, mentally, and emotionally behind layers of clothing or huge sweaters. As spring turns into summer, they may be exposed more physically, mentally, and emotionally. As educators, we are in a position to help students shed these “layers” and move beyond appearances, allowing them to embrace what makes them unique and special.
It is important to be aware of what metaphorically season your students are experiencing and support them the best you can. Some students love and appreciate themselves, both on the inside and out just as they are. Others are into outside appearances as dictated by the professional media and sometimes peers.
The Dove Self-Esteem Project 31-day calendar challenge is a great way to guide your students towards improving body confidence in any season. Moreover, the Dove Self-Esteem Project Confident Me! curriculum includes lesson plans you can use in-person or remotely. Conducting a no-cost Dove Self-Esteem Workshop at the beginning of the school year can help build body confidence and self-esteem in your class and set the tone for the year. Don’t delay!
