Lessons for Distance Learning; Dove Self-Esteem Project

Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment

During a time of unknown educational policies, processes and procedures, we are finding new ways to reach and support students as they continue to develop. The Dove Self-Esteem Project aims to encourage the next generation to have a positive relationship with the way they look, inside and out.

To support educators during the time of distance learning, the Dove Self-Esteem Project has created three mini-lessons adapted from their Confident Me! single lesson classroom version. These lessons are recommended for middle school students ages 11-14, but can also be used by high school students as well as upper elementary students with adult support. The intent is for educators like school counselors, health teachers, or physical education teachers to assign the lessons to their students via email, online platforms or by printing out the materials to hand out. A parent, guardian or mentor may work with the student supporting their learning through the three mini-lessons.

Each mini-lesson will take 20-30 minutes in length, and includes adaptations for students with internet and device access and for those that do not.

The overall goals of the lessons include:
•Understand the concept of appearance ideals
•Analyze the influences that create pressure to achieve appearance ideals
•Build media literacy skills by exploring how images and messages are often manipulations of the truth
•Challenge the appearance ideals by setting a goal to build body confidence

The themes of each lesson include:
Lesson 1: Introduction to appearance pressures, professional and personal media and its’ impact on us.
Lesson 2: What is being sold in different professional media and how it might impact us and what we can do about it.
Lesson 3: Why comparing ourselves to others can be harmful, how I am unique and a goal setting activity.
