A Systems Approach to Integrating Health in Education

Hot off the press this week, we are excited to share this paper with the fields of adolescent health and education.

Cairn Guidance is excited to share and contribute this discussion paper to the field of health and education. The paper was written to help inform Robert Wood Johnson Foundation‘s (RWJF) work in education and adolescent health and both RWJF and Cairn decided to expand the reach to the public.

The paper begins by discussing the inextricable link between health and achievement, discussing both risk behaviors and links to graduation. We tried to compile the most current research addressing health topics such as social and emotional health, unintended pregnancy and nutrition with educational outcomes. Overview on education accountability measures, including the Every Student Succeeds Act attempts to draw intersections of new expectations to the importance of school health.

We introduce the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model, a framework jointly developed by both Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and ASCD, a global education professional organization. This framework helps guide, apply a systems-based approach and provide a holistic view when addressing the health and well-being of students, schools and communities.

We conclude the discussion paper with challenges and opportunities, with the hope that the field from the national down to the individual local level will collaborate to create solutions and embrace opportunities.

You may view the paper here. Enjoy, and your feedback is appreciated!
